Here at Cadeau we litterbox train all of our puppies.  At about 5 weeks of age we add a small plastic litterbox to the pen with Mum and babies and the babies begin to gravitate over to the litterbox to do their pottying.  This has worked well for us, and our new families love it too!

There are many benefits to litterbox training.  Apartment dwellers who do not own a yard can easily continue to use the litterbox and on days of bad weather, the litterbox sure comes in handy!  If you travel and stay in hotels, the litterbox can be useful there too.

We do not recommend using a litterbox 100% of the time though.  Litterbox training is not meant to train your dog to never potty outside.  It is particularly used to help assist young puppies while being house trained.  Puppies that are litterbox trained are easily trained to do their business outside.

Here's how we train our puppies to use the litterbox.  At about 5 weeks of age we put a small shallow litterpan into the puppy pen where we've cut a small area out of the front to make a lower entry way.  The puppies will quickly start to migrate over to the litterbox to do their business.  By the time they are ready to be weaned, a bigger plastic litterpan is then easily introduced to them.

Here's what you will need for your own litterbox at home.  Purchase a low-sided plastic litterbox (even the kind that you find at the Dollar Store will do) and fill it about one inch high with Feline Pine Cat Litter Pellets.  Feline Pine is 100% natural, biodegradable pine that has been heated and pressurized to remove any harmful wood oils.  It is silica dust free, and the size of the pellets decreases the chance of ingestion.  Feline Pine has absolutely no unhealthy contents or qualities and it's even recommended for post-surgical recovery.  

Feline Pine is also 100% organic and is both 100% recycled and 100% recyclable.  It is made up of biodegradable pine sawdust and you can even put these pellets in your garden, if you so choose.  We have heard great results from puppybuyers who have actually placed a small amount of the Feline Pine Pellets in an area outside to help train their puppy to potty there.  The puppies take to this transition quickly and this is a great way to also train your puppy to potty in one particular area in your yard.  How wonderful does that sound?
